Yes, Holt Marine can fix boats.

When it comes to holes in boats or just those scratched or dented, we can provide boat repairs to patch up the hull and keep your vessel structurally sound. Whether it’s patching up a hole in a fibreglass or aluminium boat, our marine mechanics are able to work of the mechanics as well as the body of your boat to keep both in tip top condition. In this post we share some strategies to look after your aluminium boat and protect it from corrosion.
How corrosion forms:
Unfortunately salt water is particularly conducive in causing corrosion. Since corrosion will most often appear on the inside of the boat first by the time it appears on the outside where most people will notice it, the problem often needs to be professionally repaired.
To avoid corrosion, boats need to have a steady supply of oxygen to the aluminium which provides an oxide layer offering natural protection. Oxygen Starvation is where the water may be trapped in crevices or the hull may be covered by rod holders or other items covering the bulkhead. Salt water that is trapped over a long time will eventually break down this protective oxide layer. Be also careful with metallic items such as hooks, sinkers, coins items coming into contact with the boat’s hull since when combined with moisture can also create corrosion.
Identifying corrosion
If you’ve noticed a leak on the outside of your boat, it’s a sure sign that there is worse signs of corrosion happening under the boat floor. Checking the boat floor by lifting up anti slip mats and the flooring of the boat can let you know what you’re dealing with. Flush this with fresh water and free any trapped leaves and debris. If you notice signs of white powder or paste this is the beginning of the corrosive process.
How to manage corrosion
• Wash the boat with freshwater after every trip out on salt water
• Leave bungs open and bow in the air to drain remaining water
• Repaint any chips and scratches in the boat’s paintwork if applicable to avoid the chance of moisture being caught between the aluminium and the paint
• Keep your boat as clean and dry as possible. Essentially there can be no corrosion if there is no moisture.
• Have any major scratches, holes and dents repaired by the expert team at Holt Marine sooner rather than later!
