Rules on Recreational fishing in Queensland

Australia is fortunate to have beautiful marine life and rich natural resources.  To help make sure we can enjoy these wonderful boating and fishing opportunities for future and later generations, the QLD government have made a comprehensive set of rules for recreational fishers. By following these rules we sustain our fish resources.

Do I require a license to go recreational fishing in QLD?

You don’t need a license if you plan to fish in tidal waters.  But, say you wanted fish in a dam, some local councils will request you to have a permit to fish in dams which are managed by the government.  It’s always best to check with the local Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol before fishing in any dam.

Is there a cap to how many fish I can catch?

The limit of fish varies relative to the type of fish. If an expert deems that a particular fish is plentiful, then there isn’t a cap. However, other species might be controlled by a number, this is also known as a bag limit.  The goal is sustain fish populations and make it fair for all fishers. For info about  the limits see the recreational fishing rules.

Is there a set limit to the size of fish I can catch?

Legally it depends on the species, but for some fish there isn’t.    If a certain type of fish is regulated and are above or below a particular size then the fish must be returned to the water.  The legal limit is also in placed to factor in the species reproductive cycle.

Which type of fish are regulated?

Before you go out fishing or boating contact your local fishing tackle shop or get in touch with the QLD Boating and Fisheries Patrol office for up to date information.

What’s the best way to handle fish I want to release?

When you handle a fish be quick but be delicate at the same time. Keep the fish away from hot surfaces.  Sometimes you might need help the fish swim to move water over its gills and assist it to recuperate before you let it go.
